ANGENIEUX
6X MULTI FORMAT ZOOM
Angenieux is well known for its optical excellence, and this lens definitely lives up to that reputation. It’s the perfect combination of vintage character and quality performance. Images are sharp in the center with low contrast across the frame. Flares are bold and bokeh is predictably gorgeous and textured. It’s one of the only cinema zooms that pairs well with vintage prime sets from the 50’s/60’s/70’s. What’s not to love?
In the 1960’s, Angenieux still had not figured out the best mechanics for cinema use. This lens in its original body had a rotating and telescoping front group, which made it a nightmare for camera assistants. Furthermore, the original lens was only designed to cover the Academy 35mm format, which is far smaller than today’s digital sensors. We wanted to use our favorite vintage Angenieux zoom lens with our favorite cinema cameras, but without any compromises. The Multi Format Zoom was born.
Our simple yet elegant design multiplies the functionality of the original lens. Thanks to Optica Magnus expanders specifically designed to expand these vintage cinema zooms, cinematographers can use this special glass on any professional camera regardless of sensor size. Just change out the rear optical group for the appropriate coverage needed (A35, S35, or FF). Easily swappable color coded focus, zoom, and iris scales make this lens ideal for any size rental shop. Front diameter is a standard 136 mm and all movements are now internal. We’ve also added a folding top handle for easy lens changes.
We believe the best projects are collaborations, and this lens illustrates that perfectly. Mark LaFleur of Old Fast Glass noticed the need for such a lens and trusted us to make his dream a reality. We joined forces with our trusted partner GL Optics for our newly conceived Multi Format Zoom system. Optica Magnus was the obvious choice for the highest quality cinema expanders and the images speak for themselves. The end result is something truly innovative, practical, and gorgeous. We couldn’t be more proud of this team and this lens.
